Police Scotland confirmed that the driver of the vehicle, a 46-year-old male, is in a stable condition in hospital following the horror smash, and enquiries into the incident are ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Officers were called to a single car crash on Station Road, East Linton, around 11.30pm on Wednesday, 17 August, 2022.

"A 46-year-old man was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where he remains in a stable condition. Enquiries are ongoing into the cause of the crash and the road remains closed."

East Coast Buses have also added a service alert to their site, saying: "Due to a road closure buses are unable to serve East Linton and are instead diverted via A199 in both directions until further notice." The two services affected by the road closure are the X7 and 106.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 11.26pm on Wednesday, 17 August to reports of a road traffic collision involving one car that had fallen from a bridge in East Linton.

"Operations Control mobilised two appliances to the scene to assist a male casualty, releasing him from the vehicle and handing him into the care of paramedics. Crews made the area safe before leaving."
