East Lothian and Midlothian schools to close as a result of teachers strike

A decision to close council run schools and nurseries due to strike action next week has been described as 'regrettable' by East Lothian's head of education.

Both East Lothian and Midlothian Councils have confirmed there will be no classes next Thursday when teachers are due to walkout on a one day strike.

Midlothian Council said the only facility unaffected will be Scots Corner. Penicuik, an early learning centre operated in partnership with Royal Regiment 2 SCOTS.

In East Lothian breakfast clubs, after school clubs and other school activities operated by partners will be able to run as the school buildings are opened up for their use.

Parents in both local authority areas will also receive a BACs payment for those children and young people entitled to a free meal on the day.

In a letter to parents Nicola McDowell, East Lothian's head of education, said: "I know that this action will mean disruption to learning, and that our families will have to make alternative childcare arrangements on that day and it is regrettable that we have had to make this decision, however ensuring the health and safety of our children and young people must take priority."

Midlothian's executive director for children, young people and partnerships, Fiona Robertson added her own acknowledgement of the impact the closures will have on families telling them: "I am sorry for the inconvenience this will cause".

Ms Robertson added: "While the council has been formally notified by trade unions of their intention to strike, there is also the possibility that through ongoing negotiations the strike may not take place.

"We will keep you informed as the situation develops through the council website and your child’s school."
