An east London restaurant which dumped its waste near local homes has been ordered to pay nearly £7,000 for fly-tipping.
Wah Bey on Cranbrook Road, Ilford, was prosecuted by and fined by Redbridge Council after inspectors found rubbish dumped around their bins in breach of a legal notice.
Officials also found multiple bags of kitchen and food waste from the restaurant fly-tipped on the street and in and around residents’ bins on nearby Frinton Mews, sparking complaints.
Fines were issued to the restaurant for fly-tipping, but these were unpaid by company director Sarfraz Ghaffar, eventually leading to court action.
Ghaffar pleaded guilty at Barkingside Magistrates Court on Tuesday August 1 to six charges of flytipping and two charges of breaching an environmental legal notice.
He was ordered to pay fines, court and council costs, as well as compensation to the council for clear up costs - all totalling £6,824.
The court also heard that Ghaffar, 43, had also been convicted in December 2022 for four breaches of an environmental notice, for which he’d been fined and ordered to pay court and council costs totalling £2,142.
Redbridge Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety, Cllr Khayer Chowdhury, said: “We all have a responsibility to ensure our streets and neighbourhoods are clean, and that includes businesses.
“Fly-tipping commercial waste on our streets and into the bins of innocent residents is unacceptable.”
