An East London Labour councillor barred from standing for re-election has defected to the Green Party, accusing her former party of institutional racism.
As the council prepared to vote on its annual budget on Wednesday (March 4), Hackney councillor for Brownswood, Soraya Adejare, attacked the Labour government’s “totally unacceptable” local authority funding as she crossed the floor to back the opposition’s alternative budget. This left Hackney’s Mayor upset saying she felt let down “by someone I really care about”.
