East Kilbride YM side claim treble in 101st year to create history

EKYM’s Greater Glasgow Premier side are treble winner after sealing the feat with two trophies in the space of a week.

Manager Graeme Robertson Jnr and assistants Declan Harley and Ryan Wilson created a bit of history in YM’s 101st year by guiding the team to a treble for the first time in the club’s long existence.

They won their league title recently and have now added the President’s Cup and Bobby Thomson Challenge Cup to close an astonishing season – in which they won 30 games and lost just four, including a penalty shootout loss in the Amateur Cup last 16.

They scored an impressive 129 goals along the way.

YM won the GGPL President’s Cup by defeating GSC 4-2 to kick-off a great week. A Kyle Rankin double, plus strikes from Stuart Gordon and Ross Anderson won them that trophy.

And they then defeated Colquhoun Amateurs 5-0 to complete an outstanding season with their third piece of silverware. Rankin netted another double to take his tally for the season to 61, while Ben Alston, Josh Cairns and David Thomson were also on target.

Meanwhile, any hope East Kilbride YM’s Caledonian Premier League side had of silverware this season was brought to a halt last week.

Graeme Robertson’s side fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Thorn Athletic in Saturday’s President’s Cup final, having eased past Caley League champions Dumbarton Academy FPs in the semi-finals last Tuesday night, thanks to a Cammy McCulloch double.

Unfortunately, Saturday’s blustery conditions hampered both sets of players with the final becoming a damp squib. YM had an early effort cleared off the Thorn goal line and had another decent early chance, but it was Thorn who scored the only goal of the game in the 10th minute.

A corner kick was partially blocked and fell kindly for the Thorn forward to score from close range and break YM hearts.

The loss brings the season to an end for the Caley side having played 38 matches and scoring 125 goals, with Ross McDonagh top scorer with 34 goals followed by Craig Tocher on 16 and Cammy McCulloch on 14.

The club don’t get much time to switch off, however, as pre season training starts again for Caley and GGPL players on July 2.

YM’s new Saturday Morning side have started pre-season on Tuesday evenings and new players can contact Manager Chris McColl on 07505 910995 to get involved.

Meanwhile, YM 35s defeated Woodhall Thistle 35s 4-2 on Friday night with goals from Paul McLean, David Winters, Kieran Downs and Mick Kerr.
