Outgoing president Ray Jones opened the meeting of East Kilbride Probus Club and welcomed everybody to its 30th AGM.
Before he started the agenda, Mr Jones made mention of the recent death of one of its stalwart members, Jim Dunlop.
For many years Jim had taken photos of the speakers, club lunches, the trips the club made which he then put together in a montage of the club’s activities to be shown at the AGM.
Mr Jones went on say that there had been a large turnout at the funeral service and that Jim will be sorely missed.
He continued by saying that due to the COVID pandemic, the session between 2020 and 2021 had been cancelled. However, contact with the members was made by issuing a couple of newsletters from the secretary and contributors.
The session kicked off with a very interesting talk on the ‘Origins of Jazz’ then about the invention of the printing press. This was followed with a talk about the discovery of the North West Passage.
The Christmas lunch was held at the Bonnyton Golf Club where a good time was had by all – especially with Barrie Crawford showing an old black and white film called ‘Dinner for One’ which, although performed in English, has been shown each New Year on German TV and provided great hilarity.
Starting back in January saw them decanting from its usual hall to Westwood Church (due to Pandemic closure). This had repercussions as the club, overwhelmingly voted to leave its current hall and move to the Westwood permanently.
The January to April meetings went well and culminated in a members' lunch at Bonnyton Golf Club as they had enjoyed the Christmas outing so much.
This time they were regaled by their up-and-coming new president, Jim Ballantyne, who talked humorously about his days as a primary school teacher.
Mr Jones then thanked the secretary for all his hard work in organising the speakers and alike and the minutes of the last AGM were read and agreed.
At this point Ray Jones stepped down and welcomed the new president, Jim Ballantyne, with the chain of office.
The committee was elected with most of the current officers re-elected and welcoming John Walker on to the committee.
The immediate past president was presented with his tie and lapel badge as a token thank you for his year in office.
And the meeting rounded off with a presentation put together by the secretary of ‘old’ TV bits such as the Stanley Baxter Show and Chic Murray.
Enjoyed by all, the new president closed the meeting with a funny story and looked forward to welcoming everybody back on the October 6 at the Westwood church hall and wished everyone a happy summer break.
