East Kilbride Pirates hosting tryout for senior side

The East Kilbride Pirates are hosting a tryout this weekend as they look for new players to join their senior side.

The club are hosting a session on Sunday at Hamilton Palace Sports Ground and if you think you have what it takes to start for the town's American football team, head along for 10am to show what you can offer the squad.

The try out will see prospective new players aged 18 and over put through their paces, and given a chance to try out different drills for different positions in the game.

“We’re delighted to fully open up recruitment for our senior team for the first time since the pandemic struck,” explained club chair Amanda McDonald.

"This is our first open rookie session since January 2020, so we’re excited to welcome new players along. No experience is needed, just a great attitude, a good level of fitness and enthusiasm.

“Every year we welcome people of all ages from all across Scotland who’ve never tried the sport before, and teach them what they need to know to turn them into great players. In particular we’re hoping to attract people interested in lineman positions – vital for protecting the ball and controlling the line of scrimmage.

"These are amongst the most important positions on the field. These tend to be the bigger, stronger guys, although they still need to be fit and fast.”

The team will be back to national competition this year, following a regionalised conference in 2021 due to Covid-19.

They’ll be playing in the NFC 1 North division against Scottish rivals Glasgow Tigers and Inverclyde Goliaths, but also travelling further afield to take on Northumberland Vikings, Yorkshire Rams and Lancashire Wolverines.

No equipment is needed to come along and give it a go, as the taster session will be unkitted – but new players will need kit at they progress through pre-season.
