East Kilbride MSP raises road safety fears after pedestrian killed on busy road

An MSP has called for action to improve road safety on a busy dual-carriageway following a fatal accident in East Kilbride.

Enquiries are ongoing into an accident on Friday evening on the A725 Kingsway on the northbound carriageway between the Whitemoss and Whirlies roundabouts.

A 50-year-old male pedestrian was struck by a Volkswagen Golf and was pronounced dead at the scene, with a 40-year-old male driver arrested in connection with an alleged road traffic offence.

Now East Kilbride MSP Collette Stevenson has contacted police about safety concerns on the Kingsway.

Ms Stevenson told Lanarkshire Live: "News of this latest fatality is desperately sad, and I echo calls from the police for anyone with any information to share their details or dashcam footage with them, so as to assist with their ongoing enquiries.

“A number of constituents have been in touch with concerns of speeding on the Kingsway, and I have asked Police Scotland what further steps they can take, asking if it is possible for a day of action on this stretch of road.”

Police say they are looking to "establish the full circumstances which led to this incident" and are keen to speak to anyone with information or anyone who may have dashcam footage from the area on Friday evening.

Tragedy struck near the same stretch of road in 2017, when 15-year-old Megan Scott was hit at a pedestrian crossing and sadly died a short time later.
