Chris Aitken reckons Saturday’s scintillating display against Spartans was one to savour as he hailed East Kilbride’s display the best of his reign.
The Kilby gaffer watched his side brush their opponents aside in a 3-0 win at Ainslie Park to strengthen their hopes of a second place finish in the Lowland League.
East Kilbride put the game to bed with a first half blitz as Cammy Elliot, Daniel McManus and an own goal had EK 3-0 up by half-time. In the second half Kilby keeper Conor Brennan made a great stop to deny ex-EK player Cammy Russell a consolation for Spartans.
It was a game that Aitken thoroughly enjoyed watching and he admitted he savoured some well-earned beers on Saturday to celebrate.
He said: “Saturday was the best we’ve played since I took over. We were excellent from start to finish.
“We started the game really well. We were on the front foot, got in front, could have been a few more in front, and in the second half the team were professional in how they went about their jobs.
“I was delighted with them because that sort of performance has been coming. They’ve been in a good place, they’ve been training really well and they got everything they deserved.
“Spartans are a good team and you could see why they were sitting in second place before the game - and that made the result even better.
“Their manager said to us that was the best they’d seen a team play at their park as well. Joao Victoria didn’t even score on Saturday, but at times he was unplayable. You can see he’s playing with a smile on his face.
“It was an enjoyable Saturday night and I could sit and enjoy a few beers, stress free.”
Kilby are now six games unbeaten in the league and aim to make it seven this Saturday when they host Gala Fairydean Rovers, a side they have yet to face this season.
Aitken added: “We knew Spartans was a big game to try and get that second place, so now we need to kick on and finish the season strongly.
“We’ve got six league games to play and a couple of cup competitions so we just want to keep pushing.
“We’ve not played Gala this season yet because the first game was postponed, but every game is tough in this league so we need to make sure we build on Saturday.”
