The man who has passed away in the fire has been described as a "lovely and kind" person and a "true gentleman".

East Belfast Alliance councillor Ross McMullan said: "This is a devastating incident where the PSNI have confirmed that someone has tragically lost their life. As someone who lives just around the corner from Edenvale Crescent, I know that neighbours are shocked at what has happened.

"It is an extremely difficult time for their loved ones who are coming to terms with what has occurred. I want to them that they have the thoughts of everyone in the local community.

"I’d appeal to anyone with any information, no matter how insignificant they may think that information might be, to get in touch with the PSNI as it may be extremely useful with enquiries into what has tragically happened here."

East Belfast DUP MP Gavin Robinson expressed his sadness following the death, saying his thoughts were with the friends and family of the deceased and emergency services who attended the fire.

He said: "Saddened to hear from the police that a house fire last evening in Edenvale Crescent has resulted in a fatality. My thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family and the emergency services who attended the incident."

East Belfast DUP MLA Joanne Bunting said: "Thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and neighbours of the resident who sadly passed away last night, following a fire in East Belfast.

"Thank you to all the emergency responders."
