Despite the high Covid-19 caseload, the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration may decide to ease disease controls at its meeting on Friday because the health system is able to handle it, a CCSA spokeswoman said.
Apisamai Srirangson said on Monday that 90% of people infected with the Omicron variant had only mild symptoms.
She said the weekly new caseload last August and over the past week were at similar levels.
As of Aug 14 last year, there were 139,235 weekly cases, compared with 151,535 in the ninth week of this year.
Last year the number of patients with lung inflammation peaked at 5,626 on Aug 16, but this year the number peaked at 965 on Feb 26, Dr Apisamai said.
"Although the highest number of new cases last August and this March were close, the number of the patients (with lung inflammation) occupying beds was a bit over 900 this month," she said.
"As the health system can still cope with the caseload, disease controls may be eased to let everyone resume business, activities and a normal lifestyle under universal individual protection," she said.
