Early voting produced large crowds in both urban and rural voting locations

Early voting across Kentucky is in the books. Voters cast their ballots over three days last week. In Powell County, Clerk Jackie Everman said just under a thousand people voted in person. With that information, she anticipates a good turnout Tuesday. Everman said paper ballots were used at 11 precincts in May, but that’s not the case this time.

“We don’t have enough machines to supply all eleven precincts. We have a lot left over so we’ve decided to go to the voting centers this time so that we can use the machines and we’ve divided them up between the three locations,” said Everman.

In Fayette County, Clerk Don Blevins said the Senior Center was maxed out Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. He noted more than 84 hundred voters made their choices during early voting. Blevins anticipates interest in Amendment 2 regarding abortion to result in high voter numbers.

“In 2018, we voted about 52%, so if I had to guess, I would say it’s going to be north of that, whatever it is. We’re also seeing some trends nationally of younger folks getting more involved in voting. And if that happens, we’ll see even more,” said Blevins.

Polls across Kentucky are open from 6:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. or until the last person in line votes. W-E-K-U will have election coverage starting at 8:00 Tuesday night.
