Early Pickford complaints, familiar face returns, Bruno chat hijacked - Newcastle moments missed

Newcastle United made it six unbeaten on the spin with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Everton on Wednesday evening. Eddie Howe's side weren't at their brilliant best under the St James' Park lights but ensured their top six status remains intact thanks to a Miguel Almiron goal.

The Paraguayan scored a stunner in the first-half to give the Magpies the lead, leaving Jordan Pickford with no chance after his first time effort. Everton only managed one shot, not on target, all night despite testing Newcastle in the second-half.

Here are the moments you may have missed from the midweek clash.

Pickford complaints

Not even three minutes were on the clock when Jordan Pickford received the first wave of boos from each corner of St James' Park. One minute later, even Newcastle coach Jason Tindall was venting his fury at the Everton stopper.

With just four minutes played, the Toon No 2 turned to the fourth official on the sidelines and complained about how long Pickford was taking to take to release the ball from his hands.

Pickford admittedly didn't continue his time-wasting stint later in the game but did continue to enjoy the usual hostile reception he receives on Tyneside.

Schar rushes in

Frank Lampard believed Newcastle were lucky to get away with one when Dan Burn and Anthony Gordon collided in the penalty area. Eddie Howe, and most of his Newcastle stars, felt it was a fair tackle.

Gordon was incensed, however. He decided to square up to Kieran Trippier, resulting in bookings for the pair of them. But what happened after shows how much this team have each other's backs.

After Trippier was being berated by Gordon, Fabian Schar came steamrolling in to protect his defensive co-star, shoving Gordon repeatedly to get him away.

Familiar face returns

Pickford's return and the subsequent reception has been well-documented. But what many may not have seen on Wednesday was the return of a very familiar figure in the stands.

At the start of the second-half, as Pickford took his place in front of the Gallowgate End, the famous dinosaur costume was back in attendance.

The pre-historic creature did a quick sprint across the Gallowgate with a Wor Flags contribution in his hands but was soon stopped by a steward.

Bruno interview hijacked

Bruno Guimaraes helped himself to another assist on Wednesday evening, setting up Almiron's first-half strike. The Brazilian also earned his customary 'Bruno, Bruno' chants at full-time as he enjoyed the usual post-win lap of honour with his team-mates.

But those chants continued after the lap of honour had concluded, with Guimaraes trying to do a pitch-side interview with Amazon while also having fans just a few metres away from him in the stands serenading him.

Speaking to the broadcasters, the midfielder said: "Miggy is an amazing guy," he said. “I am happy because all of my assists are always for Miggy.

"So, we are happy we are doing well. I am proud of the team. It was a big step for us today – and it was a beautiful goal.”
