Early onset of monsoon calls for awareness, prevention against vector-borne diseases: Doctor

With the southwest monsoon arriving six days earlier than usual and covering the entire country, there is a heightened concern among healthcare providers regarding the expected surge in vector-borne diseases such as Dengue, Malaria, Chikungunya and Zika virus. The early arrival of monsoon rains and increased humidity create ideal conditions for mosquito breeding, leading to a spike in these diseases.

Dr Rajesh Kumar, Associate Director, Internal Medicine, Paras Health, Gurugram Paras Health, Gurugram, emphasizes the critical role of healthcare providers (HCPs) in raising awareness about these diseases and sharing preventive measures.

"Monsoon rains and increased humidity create perfect breeding grounds for mosquitoes. While malaria is more commonly known, the Zika virus, which spreads through the bite of infected Aedes species mosquitoes, can also be transmitted through sexual contact or from mother to child during pregnancy. Symptoms of Zika and dengue include high fever, fatigue, rashes, and in severe cases, complications like bleeding and organ damage.

Early detection of symptoms is crucial for effective management and prevention of complications associated with Dengue, Malaria, Chikungunya and Zika virus. There is no specific antiviral treatment for Zika or dengue, but supportive care can help alleviate symptoms and improve outcomes. Preventive measures include regularly cleaning and emptying standing water in containers such as flower pots, birdbaths, and old tires to eliminate mosquito breeding sites. Wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants can help reduce skin exposure to mosquitoes. Using insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus is also recommended. It is important to seek medical care promptly if experiencing symptoms like high fever, fatigue, or rashes. Staying in air-conditioned spaces or using screens on doors and windows can further reduce mosquito

A recent report by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) highlighted a nearly 90 percent increase in vector-borne diseases like dengue, malaria, and chikungunya during last year’s monsoon season compared to 2022. Similarly, news reports indicate significant outbreaks of monsoon-borne diseases like Zika and dengue in regions such as Pune, Bengaluru, and Maharashtra.

Meanwhile, the Government has urged states to remain vigilant and focus on screening pregnant women for Zika virus. States are also encouraged to maintain vigilance and monitor the growth of fetuses in pregnant women who test positive for the infection.
