Labor wins govt with low primary vote

Anthony Albanese has taken Labor into power with a lower primary vote than the party recorded at its 2019 election loss.

With 56 per cent of the primary vote counted across the country late on Saturday, Labor was on 32 per cent of the primary vote to 35 per cent for the coalition.

The Greens picked up 12.3 per cent of the primary vote, with Clive Palmer’s United Australia Party garnering 4.4 per cent.

Independents scored 5.9 per cent of the vote, with Pauline Hanson’s One Nation reaping 5.1 per cent.

As of 11.30pm (AEST), the electoral commission listed the following as “close” seats: Boothby, Tangney, Curtin, Robertson, Gilmore, Bennelong, Lyons, Moore, Deakin, Menzies, Bass, Lingiari, Sturt, Casey, Dickson, Monash, Leichhardt, Aston and Longman.
