Earl Spencer book claims Charles was ‘giddily elated’ after Diana’s death

  • Earl Spencer has claimed in his memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister , that King Charles sounded “giddily elated” and like a “lottery winner” on the day Princess Diana died in August 1997.
  • The memoir, serialised in the Daily Mail , alleged in an extract published on Wednesday that King Charles remarked that the royal family would “forget her soon enough” during a major dispute regarding her funeral arrangements.
  • Buckingham Palace issued a rare rebuke in response to the memoir's claims on Wednesday, releasing a statement noting that King Charles is mindful that “grief can cloud reason”.
  • Amid the fallout from the claims, the Prince and Princess of Wales visited Bute Shinty Club in Scotland to highlight local community projects.
  • Separately, King Charles spoke at an artificial intelligence summit, urging tech leaders to ensure AI remains firmly in the service of humanity with adequate safety controls.
