Eamonn Holmes weighs in over the Will Smith Oscars incident with Chris Rock

Eamonn Holmes has weighed in on the shocking moment at the Oscars when actor Will Smith took to the stage and lashed out at host Chris Rock.

Hosting GB News this morning, the Belfast broadcaster suggested it was confusing that Will Smith appeared to laugh at the joke host Chris Rock made about his wife, before taking to the stage and hitting him.

While discussing the hot topic of the day with co-host Isabel Webster, Eamonn appeared puzzled when he pointed out that the Hollywood superstar initially laughed at joke.

Eamonn said: "He did laugh at the joke and then took a while to reconsider it."

Comedian Rock took aim at Smith's glamourous wife Jada Pinkett Smith when he said: "Jada, can't wait for GI Jane 2," referencing the fact she had shaved her head into a buzzcut.

Last year the actor, 50, opened up about her decision to shave her head, after suffering from alopecia.

Whilst asking their viewers who was the hero and who was the villian in the controversial moment at the award's show, Eamonn went on to say: "By and large, I agree with you, it is very hard. They can probably slag Will Smith off, and he would take it, but you know a member of his family, his child or wife, or whatever is not so funny.

"Who wouldn't have done that?"

The presenters then chatted about how LA is 'woke' with Eamonn agreeing saying:

"LA is wokeism central, isn't it?"

Isabel replied: "Well, you can't make a joke now without getting assaulted.

"We are going to see what they are going to do about that. Who's the hero, and who's the villain? Chris Rock or Will Smith?" added Eamonn.

Following the incident, Will Smith went on to pick up the Best Actor award for his performance as the father of tennis superstars Serena and Venus Williams in King Richard where he used his acceptance speech to apologise to the Academy and “all my fellow nominees” – but not Rock.
