Eamonn Holmes praises police after being pulled over on his way to work

Eamonn Holmes has praised police officers after he was pulled over on his way to work.

The North Belfast man said the two young officers, who were in their 20s, are an "absolute credit" to Surrey Police.

They stopped the car the TV presenter was travelling in early on Wednesday morning after a spate of car thefts in Eamonn' s area.

Taking to Twitter before 5am, Eamonn said: "Pulled over by the #police on the way into work and delighted to be so. A lot of car thefts in my area and they were just checking that the car I was in wasn't one of them...

"2 young officers in their 20s and an absolute credit to @SurreyPolice."

One user replied: "Thanks for complimenting officers who were proactively patrolling, trying preventing crime. In these days of negative stories it’s important."

Later talking on GB News Breakfast, Eamonn said: “They politely explained that there had been a high number of thefts of cars near to where I lived.

“They thought it was a little bit unusual to see a car like mine driving around so early in the morning so they wanted to make sure everything was OK and above board.

“We were able to speak to them and explain there was nothing untoward going on. But I am actually very grateful to the officers. They were lovely young people and if they were my children I’d be incredibly proud. It’s actually very reassuring to know the police are keeping an eye on things.”
