The NFL’s June 1 date is just 24 hours away, and with that you can expect some trades, shocking releases and team salary caps impacted by dead money going on or off the books.
So what is dead cap?
Any future, unpaid, guaranteed salary or bonus or any already paid signing bonus that hasn’t yet been allocated to the salary cap becomes the responsibility of the team in the event of a release.
The salary cap will increase to $224.8 million for the 2023 season.
For some teams, the slight increase in cap space provides a little breathing room to retain players on expiring deals or acquire talent that could help them succeed in the upcoming season.

Fletcher Cox
Dead cap hit: $15,359,280
The Eagles re-signed Cox on a 1-year, $14 million deal, but the dead money comes from pushing millions back in dummy years over the past five years.
Javon Hargrave
Dead cap hit: $11,956,000
Hargrave lived up to the three-year, $39 million deal he signed before the 2020 season, and his 11+ sacks in 2022 landed him a $84 million deal from San Francisco.
Brandon Brooks
Dead cap hit: $9,797,237
When Brooks retired, he had his dead money split over two years after restructuring his deal.
Isaac Seumalo
Dead cap hit: $7,530,000
Seumalo signed a 3 year, $24,000,000 contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, including a $6,950,000 signing bonus, $6,950,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $8,000,000.
James Bradberry
Dead cap hit: $4,972,000
The Eagles signed Bradberry to a one-year, $7.5 million contract last spring after he was released by the Giants.
Bradberry responded with an All-Pro season, and re-signed on a thee-year, $38 million deal.
Jalen Reagor
Dead cap hit: $1,802,850
The 2020 first round pick was traded to the Vikings, but his salary will linger on for another year.
Kyzir White
Dead cap hit: $1,172,000
The former Chargers linebacker signed a one-year deal and was a strong presence at the WILL linebacker spot.
Nakobe Dean is ready for an increased role, and White took his talents to Arizona.
T.J. Edwards
Dead cap hit: $711,000
Edwards signed a one-year contract extension last season after replacing Eric Wilson and his ability to hold off 2022 third-round pick, Nakobe Dean, was supposed to dictate his future.
Edwards led the Eagles in tackles and promptly signed a three-year deal in Chicago.
