E.on energy deal sells out after Martin Lewis tells millions of people to sign up

An energy tariff that was flagged by Martin Lewis as a “corker” of a deal has been pulled within hours of being advertised.

The MoneySavingExpert founder had flagged the E.on Next Online V11 one-year fix to his 1.3million followers on Twitter, which was set at the same rate as the April 2022 price cap.

E.on customers who pay by direct debit, and are currently on the price cap, were being offered the deal by post and through the E.on website.

The energy giant has three million customers in the UK, including prepayment and direct debit users.

Writing on Twitter on Monday, Martin said: “IMPORTANT PLS SHARE: E.on and E.on Next Direct Debit customer on the price cap?

“Log in today & see if ur offered NEXT ONLINE V11 1yr fix. It should be SAME rate as the April price cap (ie 54%ish more than now - check).

“If so, as cap likely to rise another 24+% in October it's a corker.”

Sadly, E.on has since confirmed to The Mirror that this deal has now been pulled following the unprecedented demand.

E.on customers were also offered a slightly more expensive two-year fix, which Martin described as a “slightly less but still a definite winner”. This has also been removed from sale.

Of course, if prices fell within the year, you could end up paying more if you stayed on the fixed rate - but experts think this is very unlikely.

This is why the MoneySavingExpert founder had urged households to jump on this deal if they were offered it.

Some customers also replied to Martin saying the deal had no exit fee, which means they could leave in the unlikely event that energy prices did tumble.

Ofgem has announced it is hiking its energy price cap - which limits the rates a supplier can charge for each unit of gas and electricity you use - by £693 from £1,277 to £1,971 in April.

The energy regulator is due to adjust its price cap in October 2022, where prices are largely predicted to rise again - sparked by soaring wholesale gas prices and now the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

There are currently no open-market energy fixed rates that are cheaper than the energy price cap, leaving many households with no choice but to stay on the price cap.

An E.ON spokesperson said: “Unfortunately our v11 tariff is no longer available and while we have made specific exceptions over the past couple of days for customers who had attempted to join the tariff while it was live, the tariff has now been withdrawn from sale.

“We make clear in our communications to customers that tariffs can be withdrawn at any time, and that includes in the communications that are currently being sent to customers.”
