DWP Universal Credit, PIP changes and more ahead of the new year

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced changes to Christmas and New Year benefit payments. Benefits including Universal Credit, child benefits and disability costs will be different during the festive period, with some people's money arriving earlier than expected.

Because Christmas Day fell on a Sunday with Boxing Day on a Monday the Christmas Day bank holiday was changed to Tuesday, December 27. This meant changes to payment dates for some claimants over Christmas and the same will be the case over new year.

Payments over Christmas and New Year

  • All payments due on Wednesday, December 28 will arrive on that date.
  • All payments due on Monday, January 2, will be made on Friday, December 30
  • All payments due on Tuesday, January 3, will arrive on that date.

Which benefits are affected over new year and how often will you receive them?

  • Attendance allowance - Usually every four weeks.
  • Carer’s allowance - Weekly in advance or every four weeks.
  • Child benefit - Usually every four weeks, or weekly if you're a single parent or your partner get certain benefits.
  • Disability living allowance - Usually every four weeks.
  • Employment and support allowance - Usually every two weeks.
  • Income support - Usually every two weeks.
  • Jobseeker’s allowance - Usually every two weeks.
  • Pension credit - Usually every four weeks.
  • Personal independence payment - Usually every four weeks.
  • State pension - Usually every four weeks.
  • Universal credit - Every month.
  • Tax credits (such as working tax credit) - Every four weeks or weekly. Check your payment date if you're paid every four weeks.

How your benefits are paid

You’ll be asked for bank, building society or credit union account details when you claim. You can only get paid in a different way if you have problems opening or managing an account.

If you cannot open or manage a bank, building society or credit union account, contact the office that pays your benefit to find out how to get it paid.

If you receive Universal Credit, call the Universal Credit helpline.
