The UK Government is introducing a number of ways to reduce barriers older workers often face when trying to re-enter the workforce. It is providing over £20million over the next three years for an enhanced offer for people aged 50 and over to remain in and return to work.
Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Employment Minister, Guy Opperman, said that eligible older jobseekers on Universal Credit will receive more intensive, tailored support, on top of the support that work coaches offer all claimants. He added that full-time 50 Plus Champions are now in every Jobcentre Plus district across Great Britain, to upskill Work Coaches in supporting over 50s return to work.
In a written statement earlier this week, Mr Opperman said: “We are also expanding delivery of the Mid-Life MOT, which supports those in their 40s, 50s and 60s to take stock of their finances, skills and health. As part of the expansion the Mid-Life MOTs will be delivered online, in the private sector and in Jobcentres.”
He continued: “The introduction of this package of support illustrates the Government’s recognition of the different situations, transitions and barriers currently faced by the over 50s in the labour market.”
In November last year, it was announced that a network consisting of dozens of 50 Plus Champions tasked with helping people over 50 back into work are now in place across Scotland, England and Wales. They are working directly with Jobcentres and employers to remove any barriers that are keeping older workers out of the jobs market.
The 50 Plus Champions will assist Work Coaches to change employer attitudes about hiring over 50s as well as matching jobseekers with opportunities that suit their skills. The Jobcentre Mid-Life MOT service supports people to take stock and make plans for their work, wealth and well-being into the future.
It can help people to identify and overcome obstacles holding them back from the labour market. Support includes modernising CVs or developing new skills through specialist programmes with new employers and a new approach.
