Dwayne Johnson gets gory in upcoming trailer for Black Adam

From pro wrestler to celebrity, to the voice of Maui: Dwayne Johnson’s journey into acting has certainly been an interesting one.

And in the brand-new trailer for DC film Black Adam, he’ll be making the transition to being a superhero.

The trailer, which dropped on Wednesday, promises to give audiences a brand-new take on the Rock, and it looks like it’s going to be dark.

“Nearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the ancient gods — and imprisoned just as quickly — Black Adam (Johnson) is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world,” the film’s synopsis reads.

But Black Adam won’t be the only superhero in this film.

Instead, Johnson will be starring alongside Aldis Hodge as Hawkman and To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before heartthrob Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher.

If that’s not enough, we’re also being blessed by Pierce Brosnan, who will appear (sporting a full Irish accent) as Dr. Fate, who can see into the future.

Unimpressed: A production still from Black Adam (Warner Bros)

This film marks the first time that Black Adam will appear on screen since he was created as a comic book character all the way back in 1945.

Essentially an antihero, the character is described as one of the world’s foremost wielders of magic (in the trailer, he wields lighting, stops bullets, flies, catches rockets… the list goes on), but one who has allowed power to corrupt him.

As a result, he has been both a hero and a villain, clashing with DC’s roster of superheroes on numerous occasions.

That theme looks set to continue in the film, with Black Adam’s producer Beau Flynn telling ComicBook.com that it would be “gruesome in places.”

“We had to be authentic to Black Adam and we had to really push," Flynn said.

"The violence is real and it can be rough and gruesome in places, but I think the audience will be okay. I think the kids will be okay. There is a huge heart in this movie. And at the same time, you have to have fun. You have to have joy in these movies… The tone I think is what I’m really most proud of with the film. That’s hard. Tone is hard."

Needless to say, fans were very excited to see Johnson’s upcoming role.

“Might just be his biggest role yet, and I have full confidence that Dwayne is going to absolutely nail this,” one posted on YouTube, while another wrote that it was “definitely lookin like one of the more promising upcoming DCEU titles.”

Black Adam will be released in cinemas on October 22, 2022.
