DVSA issues urgent warning to drivers over MOT tests

The DVSA are urging drivers to book their MOT test in advance as new research reveals thousands of Brits are putting off having their car serviced.

The MOT test checks that your vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards. You must get an MOT for your vehicle by either the third anniversary of its registration or the anniversary of its last MOT, if it’s over three years old.

You cannot drive or park your vehicle on the road if the MOT has run out. You can be prosecuted if caught.

An MOT lasts for a year. The date it runs out is printed on your current MOT pass certificate. You can be fined up to £1,000 for driving a vehicle without a valid MOT.

You can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date. Car Insurance Expert at Confused.com, Alex Kindred said: "The general running costs and maintenance of driving a vehicle can be expensive. Our latest research found that this year, nearly one in four (24%) of motorists are willing to sacrifice a vehicle service so that they save a bit of money.

"An MOT is a legal requirement and is there to protect all road users. There's also the risk of a possible driving ban and invalidating car insurance, potentially leaving drivers without cover.

“It's important for motorists to keep on top of their vehicle maintenance, such as servicing and repairs. Failing to do so could result in an MOT failure."
