Motorists who are due to get married have been warned that they could face a hefty £1,000 fine if they do not update their details.
With a change of name, you must ensure your licence is updated. You must do so by informing the DVLA about the change.
You must also ensure your V5C log book is updated, Your V5C is a document issued by the DVLA to the registered keeper of a vehicle.
To update your driving licence, you will need to send over a form D1 ‘Application for a driving licence’ if you have a car or motorbike, as well as your old driving licence, reports Birmingham Live.
You will still be able to drive while you wait for your new licence, according to DVLA guidance.
The process is the same if you want to change your title, for example from Ms to Dr. You do not need to send evidence unless it’s a hereditary title.
You’ll get a new licence with your updated name. For your V5C log book, you can also update information if it is wrong but can take up to 6 weeks to get your new log book after you send it off.
You do not need to include proof of your name change if you’re changing your name because you got married or divorced, or because it was spelt incorrectly in the log book by mistake. Those who may have legally changed their name will have to include proof.
A spokesperson from the DVLA said: "You must update your vehicle log book (V5C) if you change your name. It’s usually free to update it.
"You can be fined up to £1,000 if you do not tell DVLA when your name changes. You can also update information if it is wrong by mistake, for example if your name is spelt incorrectly."
