DVLA issues older drivers urgent licence renewal scam warning

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has issued an urgent warning to drivers older than 70.

Elderly motorists have been warned that they must renew their licence every three years. Those who do not do this could be hit with a £1,000 fine.

The DVLA has said that drivers should use its online renewal service to get a new licence as soon as possible. The agency also warned against using 'middle-man' companies that overcharge users to renew their licence when it should be free.

As reported by Birmingham Live, the DVLA has urged motorists older than 70 to renew their licence directly from the UK Government and to stay clear of other websites offering the service — even those that appear high up on Google search listings.

These sites charge users money, only to pass their renewal application onto the DVLA anyway, and are in no way associated with the agency. There is also no guarantee that these applications will be processed anyway faster than those made through the DVLA.

While the DVLA has not named any websites in particular that are charging for the service, it advised motorists to always renew their licence directly.

DVLA chief executive Julie Lennard said: “Drivers looking to renew their licence at 70 and over should use our online service which is secure, free of charge, and also the quickest and easiest way to transact with DVLA.

“Customers usually receive their driving licence in just five days. Always remember to always use Gov.uk when using any of DVLA’s many online services.”
