DVLA issues new warning as drivers could be hit with £1,000 fines

Motorists are being warned they could be fined £1,000 if they do not make the DVLA aware of a number of changes.

On Friday, the government department tweeted to remind people they must update their driving licence, vehicle log book, direct debit for vehicle tax and any private number plate documents, if they change address.

Failing to tell the DVLA if you move home could see you hit with a £1,000 fine. And other changes must also be reported if you want to avoid a harsh penalty.

Drivers must also tell the DVLA if they write a vehicle off, as well as making them aware of any medical condition or disability. Failure to do so could see you fined £1,000.

And if you drive without letting the DVLA know of a medical condition, you could also be involved in a dangerous accident, and be prosecuted.

Earlier this year the DVLA also said hundreds of thousands of drivers risked a fine after failing to renew expired photocard licences. Figures showed 926,000 people entitled to drive in the UK held cards on September 3 which became out of date in the 12 months to the end of August.

That represents 2% of all drivers. Failing to return an expired licence to the DVLA) is an offence under the Road Traffic Act 1988.
