DVLA advises to apply online due to backlog and delays with processing paper applications

A high volume of enquiries has led to the DVLA issuing an update on its current processing times. In a report by the Liverpool Echo, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency has said that due to ongoing Covid safety measures and the impact of previous industrial action, there are ongoing delays with processing paper applications.

The DVLA said that applying online is the quickest, easiest, and often the cheapest way to submit details, as online services are working as normal and without delay. If you have applied online, applications are already being processed.

But, as wait times could take a while, you may still be able to drive while your application is being processed. The DVLA said: "We are still experiencing delays with paper applications. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and our staff are working hard to reduce waiting times. There may be additional delays in processing more complex cases, for example, if medical investigations are needed as part of your driving licence application."

Some applications currently being processed date back to March. The full list of applications and the date the DVLA is currently working on will be updated regularly and can be seen as:

  • Renew a driving licence with a new photo - March 7, 2022
  • Apply for a first provisional driving licence with UK identity - March 8, 2022
  • Renew a driving licence if you are 70 or over after disqualification or revocation - April 5, 2022
  • Apply for a first vocational driving licence - April 7, 2022
  • Renew a vocational driving licence - April 7, 2022
  • Apply for a driving licence with non-UK identity - March 7, 2022
  • Apply for or renew a tachograph card - April 7, 2022
  • Apply to change your name or address on your driving licence - March 10, 2022
  • Tell DVLA about the sale of a vehicle - April 5, 2022
  • Vehicle registration certificate (V5C) changes - April 5, 2022 (You must contact DVLA within 6 weeks if you do not receive your vehicle document)
  • Apply for a replacement V5C log book - March 25, 2022
  • Register a vehicle for the first time (including previously used and imports) - March 25, 2022
  • Retain or assign a vehicle registration number - April 4, 2022
