During research, Czech scientists built microscopic cleanup robots from 2 materials and tested them against plastic pollution. Now, the moving swarms remove about 94% of polystyrene and 89% of PET from contaminated water

Microplastic pollution has become a growing environmental concern because tiny plastic particles can spread through water and soil and eventually enter the food chain. Their small size can also make them difficult to collect, particularly when they become trapped within soil.

Researchers are exploring new ways to tackle this problem, including the use of microscopic robots that can move through contaminated environments. In a recent study, Czech scientists tested magnetically controlled microrobots designed to capture microplastics from both water and soil.
