Durham man smashed up ill mother's garden furniture and ornaments on Christmas Eve

A Durham man smashed up his ill mother's garden furniture on Christmas Eve and is now banned from contacting her.

Shaun Parker was already serving a suspended prison sentence for an assault he carried out on a man who he kicked in the head when he committed the criminal damage offence against his mum on December 24. The 34-year-old caused damage to her garden ornaments and furniture after turning up to her home.

Parker, of Croxdale, Durham, appeared at Durham Crown Court on Friday to be sentenced for criminal damage and breach of the 21 month prison sentence, which was suspended for two years, and was imposed in December 2020. Paul Cleasby, prosecuting, said: "The defendant has an estranged relationship with his mother. He suffers with drug and alcohol addiction and his mum is in ill health.

"The defendant knows he's not welcome at her house, and on December 24, he went to her home and while outside damaged her garden ornaments and furniture. The police were called and he was arrested, he accepted responsibility." The court was told that £90 worth of damage was caused by Parker.

Amrit Jandoo, defending, said Parker had a "horrendous background of being homeless and living on the streets". "That has now been rectified and I am told he can abide by an electronic curfew." Mr Jandoo added that Parker, who has a child, has mental health issues and suffers from depression. Sentencing Parker, Recorder Benjamin Nolan QC, handed him a nine month community order and imposed 20 rehabilitation activity days. A two year restraining order was also made, banning Parker form contacting his mother.
