A one-off event this weekend will see Durham Cathedral open its doors to visitors after-dark so they can gain a unique insight into the secret corners, normally-closed spaces and hidden history of the famous building.
The invitation to explore the cathedral during hours it normally would be closed comes as part of a Europe-wide Museums at Night initiative and, taking place this Saturday evening, it promises a rare treat. As well as offering a chance to soak up a very different atmosphere in the building as night falls, it will welcome people into the likes of the Chapter House - normally out of bounds to the public - and up its imposing tower as well as include free entry to its museum.
The Chapter House, a unique-shape room just off the Cloister, has appeared in the first two Harry Potter films, doubling as the classroom of Professor McGonagall, played by Maggie Smith, at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Visitors can see inside and also explore the 'hidden history' of the whole building, learn about the treasures of St Cuthbert inside the Durham Cathedral Museum and even climb to the top of the tower for a night-time view of the city.
