Dundee University strike staff return to work amid warnings that further action is ‘inevitable’

Union leaders have warned that further Dundee University strike action ‘looks inevitable.’

It comes as UNISON members continue to reject plans for - ‘work until you drop’ pensions reforms.

The grim prediction was issued as up to 300 staff returned to work today after four-weeks of action.

This followed union members rejection of management proposals to close their pension scheme to new members and cut benefits for existing members.

Local UNISON Regional Officer Mo Dickson told Dundee Live: “The University has mistakenly chosen to spend its time and resources on attempting to undermine the strike with outside help rather than engaging with the concerns of their own staff.

“They are hiding behind a meaningless formal consultation when what our members need is a return to the negotiating table and an improved offer which would allow staff to retire with dignity.

“The University management has the nerve to ask the trade unions to tell them how to make their potentially unlawful changes more palatable, yet they are not prepared to roll up their sleeves and return to negotiations.

“Unfortunately, without an improved offer and a more realistic approach by management, further strike action looks inevitable.

“Had University management been brave enough to visit the picket lines, they would have seen there is an appetite among members to see this campaign through until justice is finally done.”

A Dundee University spokesperson told Dundee Live today: "We have made a competitive offer in relation to the University of Dundee Superannuation Scheme (UoDSS) which presents existing scheme members with real choice.

"We remain committed to full consultation with the campus unions and have repeatedly called on them to join that process, which still has over a month to run.

"We have just run a series of member consultation sessions with staff in April and early May and are engaging with staff. There are numerous ways of feeding into the consultation and the University will carefully consider the feedback and views received.

"Our proposal for the University of Dundee Superannuation Scheme (UoDSS) comprises a revised Defined Benefit (DB) scheme alongside a Defined Contribution (DC) scheme, allowing existing members of UoDSS to choose the scheme which best serves their needs.

"The new DC scheme will ensure that there is a pension offering that is more affordable to hose who are not served by the current DB scheme and widens the availability of a pension to many more than the current members.

"Once the switch to this new scheme is made, new employees will be able to join the Defined Contribution scheme, but not the Defined Benefit scheme, which will be closed to new members."
