Dundee United manager state of play on Fox, Ferguson and a new name tumbling with the bookies

The hunt continues for managerless Dundee United

Jack Ross departed last week after a paltry 10 weeks in charge at Tannadice. The Tayside outfit's 9-0 thrashing from Celtic was the final straw for the chiefs upstairs, with Ross sent packing just two days later. It means Dundee United are on the look out for their second manager already this season and their 26th boss in under 30 years - an remarkable statistic.

And as the search goes on, Ross County boss Malky Mackay is being touted by bookmakers as a key contender for the vacancy at Tannadice. However, the Highland club's gaffer, if interested, could face a fight from Liam Fox. The caretaker manager is certainly pleading his case in a bid to take the reins in Dundee on a permanent basis, with a win at Livingston in the Premier Sports Cup before sharing to points with Motherwell in the league at Fir Park on Saturday. His odds now stand at 2/1.

The man out in front, in the hearts of many Tanandice regulars and punters, is Duncan Ferguson. The former Dundee United striker suggested earlier in the week that he was 'open' to talks with his old club. He left the club nearly 30 years ago, with a potential reunion on the cards as the Jack Ross replacement hunt continues. His odds are as low as 8/15 as things stand.

The final made in the top four at the bookies is Michael O'Neill. Another former Tangerine, O'Neill left Stoke City after three years last month. Could a move back north of the border be next?

Other names in the hat include current Inverness Caledonian Thistle boss Billy Dodds and free agent Kevin Thomson. Dodds spent three years at Tannadice in his playing days, taking charge as caretaker for a single game back in January 2006 following the departure of Gordon Chisholm.

Thomson is on the hunt for his next venture after making the decision to leave Kelty Hearts at the end of the 2021/22 campaign.
