Craig Levein could make a sensational dugout return this season with Dundee United set to offer him a free rein to keep them in the top flight, according to a report.
The Tannadice side are sitting rock-bottom of the Premiership table and held crisis talks following the sacking of Liam Fox. His stint in charge was short-lived with Jack Ross also axed this season as the Tangerines look out for a third boss this campaign.
United are currently four points behind Kilmarnock in 11th and Ross County in 10th with just 12 league games to play this season. After talks behind the scenes the Daily Record report that it is former boss Levein who has shot to the top of the wish list as the man they want to charge with completing a rescue mission and retaining their Premiership status.

Levein's previous stint at Tannadice was successful and ended with him leaving to take over the national team job with Scotland in 2009. His last dugout adventure was with Hearts in 2019 has he combined being the manager with his director of football role following the sacking of then boss Ian Cathro.
He's been involved with Highland League outfit Brechin City while he has also become a regular pundit on Sportsound in recent times but he could now be ready to throw himself back in the deep end with Mark Ogren and Tony Asghar believed to be seriously considering throwing out an SOS call to the experienced boss.
The same report states they would also be willing to hand Levein full control as they bid to sort out issues both on and off the field. During his last tenure a number of top talents like Ryan Gauld, Stuart Armsrong, Johnny Russell and John Souttar emerged.
United are without a win in their last seven league outings picking up just one draw in that horror run of results. Last time out they lost a huge relegation six-pointer at Ross County as the Staggies hit the visitors for FOUR.
Next up is Aberdeen this coming weekend followed by six final fixtures before the league split.
