Dundee City Council leader in urgent Ukraine refugee appeal

Dundee City Council’s leader has issued an urgent appeal for Ukrainian refugees.

Speaking exclusively to Dundee Live, John Alexander said the city is ready and willing to help anyone fleeing the horrific war.

He reiterated Dundee’s unflinching drive to assist families in need.

Mr Alexander - who has joined support vigils in recent days - said “humanity is what is needed right now, not bureaucracy and Dundee as an abundance of the former.”

He told us: “The approach up to this point has been nothing short of shameful. It makes me physically angry to see the poor excuse of a response from the UK so far.

“It very much feels and reads as if the UK Government are being dragged kicking and screaming to help support those fleeing the terror and horror of war.

“I remain hopeful however, that they change their approach and learn from our neighbours in Ireland and further afield.”

And describing Dundee’s impressive track record helping those in their time of need he added: “Dundee has always been a welcoming city and we've already helped respond to the Syrian refugee crisis and more recently, to support Afghan refugees.

“The city's response from Dundonians in every community has been inspiration and heart-warming. “

And he revealed his team has already reached out to the Scottish Government and Home Office.

He said: “We have the expertise through our previous experience and my officers are working with COSLA, Scottish Government and the Home Office to make clear our intention to help.

“Humanity is what is needed right now, not bureaucracy and Dundee as an abundance of the former.”

Dundee residents have stood strong with Ukraine since the war began last month.

In one of the most moving vigils last week, a large crowd gathered on the green outside Morgan Academy to call for peace and standing against the horrific war.

The distinctive blue and yellow Ukrainian National Flag was projected on the school building to keep up awareness around the conflict where citizens are being bombed in their homes, places of work and schools.

Speaking at the gathering, a spokesman for the Stobswell Forum said they believe that in 2022 “children shouldn’t be forced to face this type of trauma anywhere in the world.”
