Dunbartonshire play park forced to close after vandals cause 'danger to children'

A playpark in Kirkintilloch has had to be closed by East Dunbartonshire Council after recent vandalism has made the equipment unsafe.

The closure was announced yesterday on social media by the council who said that the damage is so extreme that the park now 'presents a danger to children', and have urged anyone with any information about the vandalism to contact police.

The damage is still to be fully-assessed, and only then can decisions about repairs and the park's potential re-opening be discussed.

The council said: "Unfortunately, we have been forced to close Merkland Play Park in Kirkintilloch following vandalism to the large multi-play unit. The damage is so severe that the equipment now presents a danger to children.

"Once the damage has been fully assessed a decision will be taken on any repairs or replacement equipment that is needed.

"We hope to have the play park open again as soon as possible.

"Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to contact the police on 101."

Local residents took to the comments to share their frustration, with one saying: "Absolutely disgusting. If the ones responsible are caught they should have to repair this. Might make them think twice next time."

While another added: "Absolutely disgusting behaviour. We took our 2 year old here last week and had to leave as there was glass absolutely everywhere. So unsafe."
