Dumfriesshire woman raises nearly £9,000 for Marie Curie in mum's memory

A Dumfriesshire woman has raised almost £9,000 by hosting a ball in her late mum’s memory for end of life charity Marie Curie.

Veterinary nurse Donna Hall of Rowanburn organised the occasion at Canonbie Hall with local residents, friends and family and smashing her original £2,000 target.

Donna, 26, said: “My mum, Josie, was 57 when she died in 2020. She spent time in hospital but she wanted to come back home and Marie Curie made that possible.

“Having mum in her usual surroundings was comforting to her but also to the family as it meant we could be with her all the time.

“The Marie Curie healthcare assistant looked after mum and us and nothing was ever too much trouble. She would sit and chat to mum, hold her hand and make sure she was comfortable.

“We knew that we could go to sleep knowing that mum was in safe hands and not on her own.

“When mum died, we were by her side. But as the time was out of office hours, I didn’t know who to call as the doctors was closed.

“I called Marie Curie and the healthcare assistant came to see us and stayed with us. We were fortunate that mum received Marie Curie care at home and the donation is our way of saying of thanks.”

She added: “I never imagined to raise such a fantastic sum of money as my goal was to raise a couple of thousand pounds.

“I want to thank everyone who came along and donated as it makes such a difference and ensures other families can receive Marie Curie care and support.”

Elma Mitchell, deputy head of fundraising for Marie Curie in Scotland, said: “Thank you to Donna and to everyone who donated.

“It’s through wonderful supporters that we are able to continue being there for terminally ill people and their loved ones in their homes, and our two Scottish hospices, in their final days, weeks and months.”
