Fundraising efforts have been under way across Dumfriesshire to help an estimated 17 million people in Turkey and Syria affected by the powerful earthquakes there.
Yesterday the DEC Scotland Turkey-Syria Earthquake Appeal announced it had raised more than £8 million in 10 days, as the UK total passed £90 million.
Money donated is funding aid now reaching millions of people in vulnerable communities in north-west Syria and Turkey.
More than 45,000 people are now known to have died with freezing conditions afflicting the millions injured or made homeless.
The tragedy has galvanised many people in the region to make a donation or to take up fundraising.
The Annan and District Rotary Club has donated £1,770 to ShelterBox towards its response to the Turkey and Syria earthquakes following collections at Caledonia Park retail centre in Gretna at the weekend, plus funds from their own charity account, and from online donations.
The cash will fund either three complete shelter-boxes or five tents through ShelterBox, which is an international disaster relief charity providing emergency aid to families around the world who have lost their homes to disaster or conflict.
Further donations are still being accepted, and can be made through the club’s website or Facebook page.
The Dumfries Lions Club has made a donation of £550 to the Lions International Disaster Appeal.
This will be added to the larger donation of £200,000 made by Lions International to enable members in Turkey to help individuals and communities to recover.
John MacColl, of the Dumfries club, said: “We are pleased to be able to make this donation which will assist our fellow Lions members in Turkey in providing much needed help to those who have been affected by this terrible disaster.
“I am sure that our involvement will be appreciated by those in our region who have family and friends in Turkey and Syria.
“Local Lions clubs in Turkey are now serving hot food to 2,000 people daily in Adana, Southern Turkey, assisted by clubs from Canada.”
Dumfries and Galloway Multicultural Association is appealing for donations of new blankets, winter clothing, baby food, long-lasting foodstuffs, nappies and hygiene products to help the earthquake victims.
