Dumfries gripped by Commonwealth Games fever as Queen's Baton Relay arrives

Commonwealth Games fever gripped Dumfries on Wednesday.

The Queen’s Baton Relay arrived in the town as part of the build-up to this year’s games in Birmingham, which get under way next month.

First stop was the Crichton at Dumfries, where the baton was joined by one of the competitors at this year’s games.

Dumfries pensioner Rosemary Lenton will represent Scotland in the para pairs bowling. At the age of 72, she is set to be one of the oldest bowlers to ever play at the Commonwealth Games.

She was joined at the Crichton by friends and family, including members of the Crichton Royal Bowling Club. Also there were Team Scotland cyclist Jenny Holl and Team GB Para-cyclists Fin Graham and Sophie Unwin and vice chair of the Crichton Trust Board, Kate Thomson QPM.

After that, the baton headed to Dumfries Sports Club at Nunholm.

There members of the Dumfries hockey, running, cricket and squash clubs ran taster sessions in sports that will be part of the games.

Among those joining them were excited youngsters and Clyde, the mascot for the 2014 games in Glasgow.

Dumfries and Galloway MP and Scottish Secretary Alister Jack attended both events.
