Posties have cancelled three days of strike action that were due to begin this week.
Members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) at Royal Mail were due to begin a three day walkout tomorrow in their latest round of industrial action.
However, a letter from Royal Mail’s legal team has led to union bosses cancelling the strike, as well as three days of action next week.
Staff based at Royal Mail offices in Castle Douglas, Dumfries and Lockerbie were due to take part in the walkout over dissatisfaction with the imposition of a two per cent pay rise without consultation.
CWU general secretary Dave Ward said: “We recognise the deep frustration felt by many members over this decision.
“But the fact remains that the current direction of Royal Mail doesn’t benefit the company, the community or the country.
“We still need to secure a decent future of this industry and no attempts to attack our union and our members will change our determination in fighting for that.
“The current focus of the coming days will be negotiations that can hopefully achieve a sensible deal to end this dispute.
“In the meantime, I appeal to our members to stand by their union – stay strong and don’t be provoked.”
Royal Mail and the CWU were due to have talks through the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS) on Monday. Should a deal not be agreed, the CWU plan to resume strikes on November 12.
A Royal Mail statement said: “The Communication Workers Union has announced it has withdrawn planned strike action in the next two weeks.
“We will continue to do all we can to keep business, companies and the country connected.”
