Dumfries and Galloway Council's youth work services announces return of Amazing Summer Camps

Dumfries and Galloway Council’s youth work service is bringing back the Amazing Summer Camps for 2022.

Scores of teenagers from across the region took part in the action-packed camps held near Beattock last year.

With funding received from the Summer of Play initiative, the camps are making a comeback and are set to be as popular as ever.

Councillor Archie Dryburgh, chairman of the communities committee, said: “I am delighted to see such a wide range of youth work being offered across the region for young people this summer.

“It is our council’s commitment to provide the best start in life for all our children and continue to tackle poverty and inequalities and opportunities such as this helps us to deliver our priorities.”

The camp activities are organised by young people.

A member of the co-design team said: “We are excited to be able to work on the Amazing Summer Camps again this year.

“We have lots of fun activities planned and everyone who signs up will receive their own camp goody bag that includes a t-shirt, hoody, water bottle and lots of other wee surprises.”

Alongside the summer camps, the youth work team will be out and about in communities across the region, providing youth cafes in local youth centres, town halls and parks.

The youth cafes will offer free food and activities for young people aged 11 to 25, including sports, arts and crafts, music, games and much more.

The youth enquiry service team will be available throughout the summer, providing support and advice to young people through the Blether Live Chat.

Young people can also drop in to the youth enquiry service building at DG One in Dumfries, between 12pm and 4pm, Monday to Friday for free food, company and activities.

This summer, the Youth Work Roadshows will also make a return, offering free activities for families and young people in local parks and town centres.

Councillor John Campbell, vice-chair of the communities committee, said: “The Roadshow will tour Dumfries and Galloway throughout the summer and will see children and young people getting involved in crafts, sports, games and youth work activities.

“It will be delivered by the youth work service, Lifelong Learning, NHS, Active Schools, Employability and a range of local community organisations.

“This summer is set to be an amazing experience for our region’s children and young people.”
