Dumfries and Galloway Council announces new chief executive

Dumfries and Galloway Council has a new chief executive.

Dawn Roberts will move from Cumbria County Council to take up the role in July.

She follows in the footsteps of Gavin Stevenson, who retired in December.

Ms Roberts, who is currently executive director for corporate, customer and community services just across the border, said: “I am really proud of all that has been achieved in Cumbria during my time at the county council and I look forward to building on this experience as Dumfries and Galloway’s new chief executive.

“Dumfries and Galloway Council has a really strong track record in delivering services to the people of the region and this was recognised through the recent CoSLA award for its work to strengthen community resilience through the pandemic.

“This is clearly an ambitious council for Dumfries and Galloway as a place and for the people it serves and I look forward to the challenges and opportunities ahead.”

Ms Roberts has more than 25 years of experience in local government and has recently been acting as deputy chief executive in Cumbria.

She will work with interim chief executive Derek Crichton and the council’s corporate management team “to ensure a seamless transition” when she moves to Dumfries and Galloway Council in the summer.

In a joint statement “following an extensive recruitment process,” the council’s leader and depute leader Elaine Murray and Rob Davidson said: “On behalf of elected members and staff we are pleased at the appointment of Dawn Roberts to take over as chief executive of our council.

“We believe the authority will be in safe and experienced hands and we were fortunate to find an excellent candidate for the post.

“We are delighted that Dawn will be joining Dumfries and Galloway Council.

“We wish her good luck for the future.”
