Luca Vata stepped off the bench to score his first goal for Dumbarton, and thanked the club’s senior players for helping him with the step up from the club’s under-18s.
The midfielder, who made his debut at the age of just 16 in March, scored the fourth in Saturday’s 4-0 friendly victory against Northern Premier League Workington - becoming the first graduate of Sons’ recently reformed youth system to find the net.
And afterwards he was quick to pay tribute to his teammates for their support since making the move from youth football to the first team.
Luca told the Lennox: “It’s been a big jump from the under-18s, but it’s one I’ve really enjoyed.
“I’ve learnt a lot from the experienced boys and the management team. I’ve improved a lot in that team, especially with my movement and understanding of tactics.
“The senior players have been absolutely great with me.
“They were so welcoming when I first joined and they talk to me constantly. Even just taking me to the side for a wee chat if they think I need any pointers.
“I’ve learnt a lot from everyone which has been really good.
“Everything is a big jump from the U18s. But the biggest difference is probably the tactical side. There’s a lot of in-depth work on movement, the weight of your pass, your movement. The whole lot. It’s a really big jump, but it’s been enjoyable.”
Boss Stevie Farrell meanwhile praised the youngster for his attitude since joining the first-team set-up.
He said: “I think everyone can see the development in Luca. He’s really grown physically, and has shot up.
“He’s only 17 and he’s a sponge who is learning all the time.
“We’ve tried him a few times on the right of a front three and it’s a position that we like him in. He’ll keep developing in the game time he gets there.”
And Luca, who is the cousin of Celtic youth star Rocco Vata, believe that the Sons entering a team in the West of Scotland Development League, which will see them face clubs including neighbours Vale of Leven and Clydebank, will only help push him on further.
He added: “I’m really looking forward to this season with the new U20s league. Hopefully I’ll be able to get a lot more minutes there, and with the first team, and hopefully grab another goal too.”
Whilst boss Farrell says his side will continue to stick with their new, expansive and high-energy style when the competitive action kicks off against Airdrieonians this weekend.
“We’re not going to change how we play, regardless of the opposition” he said.
“What will be, will be in the Viaplay Cup. But we’re going to be fully focused on continuing to play the way that we’ll play when the league season starts.
“I’d love to be successful in the Viaplay Cup, but the most important thing for me across all four games is getting the team ready to play in the new League Two season.”
