A group of sixth-year students at Dumbarton Academy organised and ran their own leaver’s prom after original plans for a celebration were scrapped.
The students hired out the Vale of Leven Golf Club to celebrate leaving school on June 16.
The local community were so sympathetic with the pupils that many donated their services to help the event be as special as possible.
This ranged from buffets provided by Stuart Hendry at Vale golf club, a DJ in Anthony at ACE Entertainment with DJ Cammy, a beautiful cake by Jessicakes and personalised balloons by Christine Robertson.
A proud parent of one of the pupils told the Lennox how glad they were that the pupils took the initiative to organise the leaver’s event, they said: “The sixth years did it themselves with small help from the parents.
“The kids organised it in six weeks, and they deserved it because they had missed out on so much because of Covid.
“We put a post on Facebook to see if anyone could help, and we got a great response from the local community.
“We got everything for cut rates, and everything came together in the end.
“We honestly couldn’t have done it without them.”
The Lennox understands that Dumbarton Academy’s reasoning for the initial plans being scrapped was due to a lack of interest from pupils and that there were not enough numbers to put on a large-scale rearranged celebration.
However, the parent said: “The kids approached the school in September but were told to come back to them in March, and when they did, they were told it was too late to organise it now.” Again thanking those who helped make the event a success, they added: “We were able to do it all in six weeks.”
