Dumas beat triple British Touring Car champion Gordon Shedden to pole as Ford Galaxie 500s dominated practice for the touring cars of the 1960-66 era. But engine problems prevented Shedden from starting and Dumas made a poor getaway.
That briefly allowed GT ace Frank Stippler’s Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA into the lead but Dumas soon blasted the seven-litre V8 to the front on the first run to Fordwater.
