Duke Legend Coach K Lands New Job With NBA

Former Duke coach and Naismith Hall of Famer Mike Krzyzewski will serve as the NBA’s special adviser to basketball operations, the league announced on Wednesday.

In this consulting role, Krzyzewski will be responsible for giving counsel to team executives and front offices across the league, as well as leaders who serve in other capacities within the NBA. The 76-year-old will begin his new role next week when he attends the league’s general managers meeting in Chicago.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to deepen my connection to the NBA and participate in conversations about further strengthening the league and the game,” Krzyzewski said of the new role in a statement. “Even in my retirement from coaching, the passion for the sport has never been higher. This role will enable me to stay engaged with basketball at the highest level.”

Krzyzewski spent the last year enjoying retirement after a 47-year run of coaching college basketball, which included 42 storied years at Duke. With the ACC program, Krzyzewski led the Blue Devils to five national championships and 13 NCAA tournament Final Four appearances. He also registered 1,202 wins, earning him the record as the winningest men’s coach in NCAA history.

Krzyzewski also guided the U.S. men’s senior national team to six gold medals as head coach.
