Dubliners reveal their favourite Irish songs from trad tunes to Westlife - and there's one clear winner

Dubliners have revealed their favourite Irish songs from the traditional tunes to Westlife - and there was one clear winner.

Speaking to Dublin Live, we asked Dubs which Irish song is their favourite.

You might have thought Christy Moore or U2 would top the list, but it was actually Grace by the Wolfe Tones that was the most popular choice.

“Grace by the Wolfe Tones because it’s my daughters middle name,” said one man.

Another also picked the same song, saying: “Grace, probably one of the greatest Irish ballad songs ever, it’s unbelievable.”

One more person said: “Grace because I’m a little romantic at the moment, I’m in the love buzz.”

Luke Kelly, U2, Westlife and Phil Lynott were also named as top choices.

One man said: “The first song that comes to my mind is Raglan Road and it was sung by Luke Kelly. I believe it was written by Paddy Kavanagh, a Monaghan man.

“It’s a song about Dublin and a song about heartache, it’s a bit of a sad song, but it’s a touching song, it’s lovely. I sing it when I listen to it and there’s no one else around.”

The love for the Irishness continues with another woman saying: “Black and Tans because it represents a new country because we fought for freedom.”

A third added: “Luke Kelly Scorn Not His Simplicity because it is a famous Dublin song, it’s beautiful. It’s really about an autistic child and he’s just singing about the child on the street, it’s touching."

And someone else said: “Dirty Old Town by Phil Lynott. It reminds me of some pleasant memories. I always used to fancy him as a singer and I used to dance to him in the Go Go on Abbey Street back in the late sixties.”

More modern songs came into the mix with one woman saying: “U2’s In The Name of Love from the eighties. It’s a good song, brings me back to my youth.

Another woman added: “Westlife Flying Without Wings for my child.”

But it always came back to the appreciation of the classic Irish hits. Someone said: “The Fields of Athenry written by Pete St. John who died recently, so that’s my reason.”

Another said: “The Voyage by Christy Moore, it’s brilliant. It relaxes the brain. I like my Irish songs, I’m very fond of the ballads.”
