Dublin weather: Wind chill of -8C to hit Ireland as Arctic blast brings snow showers

A teeth-chattering wind chill of up to -8C will hit Ireland on Tuesday morning, a weather expert has warned.

Wind chill is the effect of the cold wind on people and animals and the wind chill temperature is based on the rate of heat loss from exposed skin caused by wind and cold.

According to a forecasts from Meteo France, wind chill in Ireland will hit as low as -8 in places on Tuesday morning while real temperatures are currently expected to plummet as low as -1 degrees.

Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather said that the "Tuesday morning windchill will be a shock to the system" but also warned the public to keep "a close eye" on weather forecasts for next week.

He said: "Weather models a mess for next week with milder air trying to push up but the position is unclear and could result in a rain/sleet/snow mix so need to keep a close eye on forecasts for next week."

Met Eireann has forecast temperatures to plummet "well below freezing" next week. Here is their forecast for the coming days:

Tomorrow

"Saturday will once again be another mostly dry but dull day with just light stray showers. Quite cool with highest temperatures of 5 and 7 degrees, in just light variable breezes.

"Saturday night will continue mainly dry with just isolated light showers. Lowest temperatures zero to plus 2 degrees in light westerly winds.

Sunday

"Sunday will see little or no change, mainly dry but showers a little more frequent, especially in the north. Temperatures in the afternoon of 7 or 8 degrees with light to moderate northwesterly breezes.

"Sunday night lowest temperatures will be 2 or 3 degrees with light winds. It will be mainly dry and where skies clear temperatures will fall below freezing.

Monday

"A freshening northerly wind on Monday will bring rain southwards over the country, introducing colder conditions. Day time temperatures of 5 or 6 degrees in the north, still 7 or 8 degrees further to the south, and then falling through the second half of the day as the rain moves southwards.

"Monday night will be very cold with temperatures dropping well below freezing.

Tuesday

"Tuesday will be a cold day with the chance of any showers turning to sleet and snow on hills and mountains."
