Dublin weather: Orange thunderstorm warning issued with 'intense lightning strikes' hitting city

An orange thunderstorm warning has been issued for Dublin with 'intense lightning strikes' expected to hit the city all afternoon.

Met Eireann issued the upgrade to the capital, as well as Kildare, Louth, Meath, and Wicklow, just after lunchtime today as the east coast was battered by torrential rain, thunder, and lightning. It says that "further thunderstorms with intense lightning strikes with some disruption" is expected to continue.

The warning is valid until 5pm today. The capital is also subject to a Status Yellow rain weather warning until midnight tonight amid warnings of "disruption" due to the localised flooding. Cavan, Kildare, Monaghan, Louth and Meath are also included in the Yellow weather warning.

A separate Status Yellow rain warning was also issued for Carlow, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly and Tipperary. This is valid from 5:00am this morning until midnight. A Status Orange rain warning is in place for Cork, Kerry, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow.

Disruption from the rain is being reported this morning across Dublin and in the surrounding areas. Locals in Bray have reported flooding along the Killarney Road.

LiveDrive have reported flooded cycle lanes and footpaths along the Rock Road and Merrion Road. They have also said that "there are very high volumes all across the city with heavy surface water in many places".

Dublin Fire Brigade have warned motorists to "be patient today". They said on Twitter: "Already saturated ground, fallen leaves and heavy rainfall could lead to localised flooding today, and will cause challenging road conditions. Light up, be seen, and be patient.

"Don't enter flood water on foot or on wheels. What is hidden under the water line?"
