As the country wakes up this morning, the hopes of a a ‘White Christmas’ this year have been dashed.
However, Met Eireann has pinpointed the arrival of snow again on Christmas night. While rain is forecast for Christmas day, weather conditions are expected to clear up later on as temperatures drop overnight to -2C to 3C with the chance of snow falling in some areas.
A Met Eirenn forecaster said on Christmas night: "Becoming cold with frost and some icy stretches expected to develop. Scattered showers will follow across the west and north, some turning to hail, sleet or snow."

The forecast for Christmas Day is expected to see widespread, heavy showers across the country with some hail and thunder. The national forecaster said: "Some bright spells on Christmas Day, but it looks set to be mostly cloudy with widespread showers.
"The showers will be heavy and prolonged at times bringing the possibility of hail and thunder locally. Clearer and much colder conditions will move in across the northwest in the evening."
Highest temperatures today will range from 6C to 10C in moderate southwest breezes that will veer northwest later. And tomorrow could also see some more "wintry showers" on the cards.
Met Eireann said that St. Stephen's Day, December 26, will be "cold and bright with sunshine and scattered showers, some wintry in nature".
The highest temperatures will generally range from 3 to 7 degrees in moderate to fresh westerly winds.
